Dear Global Student Council,

The time of year has come again to start getting people excited for one of UVA’s largest student-run philanthropies…Dance Marathon! My name is [your name] and I am a member of the CIO Outreach Committee for Dance Marathon at the University of Virginia. If you don’t know, DM raises thousands of dollars each year to benefit the UVA Children’s Hospital, and all our fundraising efforts cumulate in our main event, a 24-hour long dance party, for the kids, on March 26th-27th 2010!

In the past, Dance Marathon has raised over $550,000, and this year we have set our biggest goal yet: to raise $200,010 for the UVA Children’s Hospital. We know that this is a huge goal, but this is where we can use your help! We would really like for your CIO to get a team together and register to dance at our 24-hour main event. You can dance, have fun and compete with other CIO’s to see who raises the most money for the kids. Your team would be dancing as a part of the University and Charlottesville community to show your support for the kids at the Children’s Hospital. We are challenging you to make a 24 hour effort to show your support for the kids. The teams that raise the most money will be eligible to win prizes and donations made in their name to the Children’s Hospital. Each dancer can register online at our website: www.dmatuva.org. Registering is EASY—it really only takes a couple of minutes. Also, the earlier teams register, the better--the DM office will have periodic gifts for teams that have registered 5 members (free blue books, free coffee, gift certificates, raffles, and more).

We would also like to come and talk to you and your committee to explain to you what Dance Marathon is and to help you get registered and excited about DM 2010. Please contact me at acs8t@virginia.edu and let me know when I can come and give your committee a presentation about Dance Marathon to help explain a littler more about what Dance Marathon really is and how you can really make a difference! We really hope that you and your CIO will consider participating in Dance Marathon 2010. Thanks so much, and I really hope to hear back from you soon about when is the best time to come and talk to your committee.

For the Kids!!

Dear Global Student Council,

My name is Harry Whelchel and I am a third year at UVa. This summer I built a website, www.thefondu.com, to start a service for International students at UVa. Through the website, I will match them with American students for a homestay over Fall Break or Thanksgiving Break.

Both American students and International students register on the website and fill out a brief questionnaire so that I can try and match students with similar interests.

Dean Yu has been incredibly helpful to me, sending out an email about the service to first and second year international students but I was just wondering if you could spread the word to the Global Student Council community that this opportunity is available?

The major difficulty I feel the program faces is a lack of supply of students willing to host, so if you could make sure to let the domestic students who volunteer through Global Student Council know about www.thefondu.com that would be so great. If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks,

Harry Whelchel
